How are foot and ankle injuries diagnosed?
At Miami Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Institute, your diagnosis starts with a physical exam, often followed by diagnostic tests to verify the type of foot or ankle injury you have. We may use ultrasounds, X-Rays, MRIs and CT scans to help determine the location and extent of your injury and how best to treat it.
Our Institute also has weight-bearing CT scans, which allow us to see what happens to your injury when you stand or bear weight.
The Institute is the first orthopedic practice in Miami-Dade County to offer weight-bearing CT. It takes 360-degree, two-dimensional X-rays of the foot and then stitches them together to create an exact, three-dimensional digital replica of the foot and ankle in less than a minute. Imaging patients while they are standing provides a true assessment of bone and joint alignment.
How are foot and ankle conditions treated at Miami Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute?
When determining the best treatment for an injury, we look at the whole patient, not just the foot and ankle. We will assess your entire gait — including your spine, hips and knees — to see how your injury may be affecting other parts of the body. Your doctor will also spend time getting to know you, your lifestyle and the activities you enjoy.
We use conservative treatments, including casts, braces or splints, whenever possible. In some cases, you may need surgery to repair damaged bones or ligaments. We may perform minimally invasive surgery or traditional open surgery, depending on your condition or injury and lifestyle.
Our team specializes in complex joint replacements with 3D-printed implants and reconstructive surgeries. We also use biologic therapies, such as stem cell treatments, to help heal injuries and ease pain.

Meet the Team
Unlike a traditional CT scan, a weight-bearing CT scan helps us better understand bone and joint alignment, which can lead to more precise and effective treatment. This test looks at your foot or ankle injury and how it is affected by your body weight.
A 3D implant is created using a 3D printer, and many of our implant designs are developed by our physicians. These implants allow us to create customized joint implants and treat complex conditions and, in some cases, restore function to the joint.
